What Are SGLT2 Inhibitors?
SGLT2 inhibitors work on the kidneys to excrete excess glucose from the blood via urine. Approximately 60–100g of glucose (equivalent to about 240–400 kcal) is automatically eliminated from the body each day. This is a completely different mechanism from GLP-1 medications — glucose is excreted even after meals, which is this drug class’s unique advantage.
In addition to weight loss (average 2–4 kg), recent research has revealed cardiac and renal protective effects, making these medications particularly suitable for patients with obesity-related lifestyle diseases.
Available Medications
Forxiga (dapagliflozin)
Considered to have the highest weight-reduction effect among SGLT2 inhibitors. Also indicated for heart failure and chronic kidney disease, with extensive supporting evidence. An average weight loss of approximately 2.58 kg over 52 weeks has been reported.
Canaglu (canagliflozin)
Backed by extensive international clinical research. An average weight loss of approximately 3.8 kg (about 5%) over 24 weeks has been reported. Suitable for those concerned about post-meal blood sugar spikes or those prioritizing weight loss.
Jardiance, Suglat, Lusefi
We also carry other SGLT2 inhibitors. Jardiance is preferred for cardiac protection; Suglat and Lusefi may be options for those concerned about side effects. Please discuss during your consultation.
