- We use semaglutide daily in our diabetes practice, giving us thorough knowledge of its properties and side effect management
- Comprehensive management of gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, diarrhea). As internists, we can prescribe anti-nausea medication and additional treatments
- Lifestyle disease values (blood sugar, blood pressure, lipids) monitored together
- For those who were hesitant to start due to fear of injections, Rybelsus is the perfect first step
- If results are insufficient, we can discuss stepping up to an injectable (Mounjaro or Wegovy)
What Is Rybelsus?
Rybelsus (generic name: oral semaglutide) is the world’s first oral GLP-1 receptor agonist. It uses the same active ingredient as injectable Ozempic and Wegovy (semaglutide), made available in tablet form through a special absorption enhancer (SNAC). It is a genuinely innovative medication.
Taken just once a day in the morning on an empty stomach. Particularly suitable for those who are reluctant to start injections or who are beginning GLP-1 therapy for the first time.
Three Key Features of Rybelsus
Who Is This Suitable For?
- Those who dislike injections and want to start GLP-1 treatment with a tablet
- Those aiming for moderate weight loss of around 5 kg
- Those with diabetes or pre-diabetes who want to manage both blood sugar and body weight simultaneously
- Those who have an established daily medication routine
- Those who want to try GLP-1 therapy as an introduction before considering injectables
Who Cannot Use This Medication?
- Those with a history of pancreatitis
- Those with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2
- Those with severe gastrointestinal disorders (e.g. gastroparesis)
- Those who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
- Those with a BMI below 18.5
Common Side Effects
Gastrointestinal symptoms are the most common. Most resolve within 2–4 weeks after starting. We can prescribe anti-nausea medication if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Q. Is health insurance accepted?
- When used for weight loss without a diagnosis of diabetes, treatment is self-pay (private). Patients diagnosed with diabetes may be eligible for insurance coverage.
- Q. How much weight can I expect to lose?
- Clinical trials show an average of 3–4 kg (approximately 4–5% of body weight) reduction when taking 14mg for 6 months to 1 year. Most patients notice results at 7mg or above.
- Q. How does Rybelsus compare to injectable GLP-1 medications?
- Even though both use semaglutide, the injectable (Wegovy) achieves greater weight loss (avg. ~15%). Rybelsus delivers approximately 4–5%, but offers the significant advantage of no injections. For those seeking stronger results, we can discuss stepping up to Wegovy or Mounjaro.
- Q. Why must Rybelsus be taken on an empty stomach?
- Taking it with food significantly reduces absorption and effectiveness. Taking it on an empty stomach with a small amount of water (approx. 120 mL), then waiting 30–60 minutes before eating, maximizes the drug’s efficacy.
- Q. Can international patients receive treatment?
- Yes. English support is available. We can also issue a medical certificate for customs declaration upon returning to your home country.
